The Hungry Mile - Urban Decay (1960 - 2003)
There area of Barangaroo was originally used by the Cadigal people for hunting and fishing. The site is named after Barangaroo who was the wife of Bennelong the two indigenous historical figures now bookend the city CBD.
The area become the main site of docks for Sydney and darling harbour became a key industrial area.
Once Sydney had established Port Botany in 1979, and industry had left Darling harbour the area began to decline. Newer container ships were becoming too large to move easily in the harbour and the area was not well serviced by road and rail transport.

Urban Renewal - 2003 - Present
In 2003, the NSW government decided to renew the area but expanding the Sydney CBD into the former dockland.
Initially, responsibility for this renewal was given to the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. Such a body was required to work across the many jurisdictions involved and remain about political and financial persuasion.
In 2009, the project was later given over to the Barangaroo Delivery Authority.
